The Rising Tide upgrade system has done nothing to help lodie stand out either, as a couple of free. Franco-Iberia is another sponsor who has fallen from grace going from game-breakingly good to puzzlingly awful in the space of a single patch. While this means Beyond Earth is built on solid foundations, it doesn’t exactly reach for the stars from them. Unlike Colonists which have clear, powerful option, and unlike Spacecraft which has lots of similar but not that powerful options, Cargo has several nice choices (but I still think well get a clear winner). Shining Path: Gain 1 free Virtue for every (10/9/8) Virtues earned with Culture. Of course, Civilization V is a great strategy game, and a few years old now, but it still seems too much of a going concern for its follow-up to be quite so similar.

Moreover, it doesn’t take long to fall into playing a game of Beyond Earth in the same ways we played Civilization V.ĭespite great hopes to the contrary, it’s difficult to deny that Beyond Earth is Civ V with a new skin and some bells and whistles hung around the edges. There are little ideas everywhere, but they don’t quite coalesce into a personality. Every ‘planet’ your game is set on looks the same, there are only a handful of aliens, all of which cease to be much of a factor after the first couple of hours of a campaign, and a new quest system, designed to present moral dilemmas such as whether to welcome or eradicate a sub-species of augmented humans, is bitty and dry. Plus their units look pretty damn awesome. I also like reading the fluff and the quest decisions you can make to augment your citizens.
I just imagine my citizens going all Deus Ex, cyborging it up. Many operations take close to 20 turns to complete. Id have to say my favourite affinity is probably the Supremacy path. I keep waiting for someone to toss up a strategy guide after playing the game for awhile, some getting a headstart for that purpose apparently, but thats just not happening. It however, has the unfortunate pleasure of being compared to Alpha Centauri and its expansion pack Alien Crossfire. Beyond Earth has an improved covert ops engine and is well worth exploring. What’s missing is a certain zest – this is science fiction at its most buttoned down, either too fearful or unable to depart from the relatively sombre tone of the Civilization series. Now, if Civilization Beyond Earth was released without any Hype or expectations I had for it, this game would have been scored higher.
